WOMEN OF THE ELCA (WELCA)
The national mission statement of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America states: As a community of women created in the image of God - called to discipleship in Jesus Christ - and empowered by the Holy Spirit - we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
We have a very active WELCA group here. Women of all ages are involved in fellowship, service, and bible study throughout the year. These groups mostly meet monthly from September to May and each has their own unique make-up and set of interests. Some meet in members' homes for monthly bible study and fellowship, others choose to meet at church. Certain circles meet during the day, while others with working members choose to meet in the evening.
Several times a year, representatives from each circle met as a WELCA Board to plan for Synod events, service projects, and WELCA luncheons. Board members coordinate representation from their circles at these events and discuss any common concerns. Below are listed just some of the activities that the WELCA at LCGS are involved in supporting throughout the year:
· assembling LWR kits
· annual Fall luncheon
· annual Spring brunch
· Synod gatherings
· quilts
· penny collections
· support of local charities with funding
· bible study
